  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 2 cups hot water
  • ¼ cup baking soda
  • coarse salt for topping
  • cheese dip (for serving)

Instructions

  1. In a stand mixer, combine 1 cup warm water and 2 teaspoons active dry yeast. Let the yeast proof and become bubbly for about 5 minutes.
  2. With the dough hook attached, gradually mix in ¼ cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon salt, and 3 cups all-purpose flour one cup at a time. If the dough appears too dry, add in 1 additional tablespoon of water.
  3. Take the dough out of the bowl and knead it into a ball. Place the dough into a large bowl, drizzle 1 tablespoon vegetable oil on top, and cover the bowl with a towel. Allow the dough to rise until it has doubled in size.
  4. Preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Divide the risen dough into 6 equal portions. Roll each piece into a long rope and twist it into a pretzel shape. *Refer to photos.
  5. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. In a medium-sized bowl, combine 2 cups hot water and ¼ cup baking soda. Dip each pretzel into this water mixture and place them onto the prepared baking sheets. Sprinkle the tops with coarse salt.
  6. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown. Serve alongside your homemade cheese sauce!
