  • Author: Andrew Recipes
  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 68 servings 1x

Description

This Old Fashioned Goulash is a classic family favorite that’s easy to make and full of savory flavors. With ground beef or turkey, pasta, and a rich tomato sauce base, it’s the perfect dish for a cozy dinner. Optional cheese topping adds an extra layer of indulgence!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs ground beef or turkey
  • 3 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced
  • 2 ½ cups water
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • ⅓ cup olive oil
  • 2 (15-ounce) cans tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes (optional, for extra texture)
  • 1 ½ cups elbow macaroni (or any small pasta)
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional for topping)

Instructions

1️⃣ Cook the Meat: In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef or turkey, breaking it apart with a spoon. Cook for 5-7 minutes until browned and cooked through.

2️⃣ Sauté the Vegetables: Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the pot. Cook for another 3-4 minutes, or until the onion is soft and translucent.

3️⃣ Add Liquids and Seasoning: Pour in the water, beef broth, and tomato sauce. Stir to combine. Add the dried basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. If using diced tomatoes, add them now as well.

4️⃣ Simmer: Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Once simmering, reduce the heat to low and let it cook for 10-15 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.

5️⃣ Cook the Pasta: While the sauce simmers, cook the elbow macaroni according to package directions in a separate pot. Drain and set aside.

6️⃣ Combine Pasta and Sauce: Add the cooked pasta to the sauce and stir to combine. Let the goulash simmer for another 5-10 minutes, allowing the pasta to absorb some of the sauce.

7️⃣ Optional Topping: If desired, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top and let it melt for an extra creamy touch.

8️⃣ Serve: Ladle the goulash into bowls and serve hot. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Meat Substitution: You can use ground turkey for a lighter version or ground pork for a richer taste.
  • Pasta Variations: If elbow macaroni isn’t your thing, you can substitute with other small pasta shapes like penne or rotini.
  • Cheese Options: You can also try mozzarella or parmesan for a different cheese flavor.
